It has been confirmed that Grecia Quirós, wife of former mayor Carlos Manzo, will be the new mayor of Uruapan.

The announcement was met with applause and tears, as the town still mourns the loss of the man considered “the people’s mayor.” Now, his wife promises to continue the legacy of justice and service that characterized Manzo, a firm hand against organized crime.

Uruapan residents say this decision honors the memory of the fallen leader and keeps alive the hope for a strong and united Uruapan.

The Hat Movement (as the independent movement led by Manzo is called) proposes Grecia Quiroz, widow of Carlos Manzo, as mayor of Uruapan.

The Michoacán Congress has received the official request for approval of Grecia Quiroz’s nomination as the new mayor of Uruapan, following the assassination of her husband, Carlos Manzo.

Carlos Manzo’s assassination fuels demands for more resources for local police forces.

Grecia Quiroz, widow of Carlos Manzo, was nominated by the Hat Movement, an independent political organization founded by her husband in Uruapan, to assume the position of mayor in the aforementioned municipality.

Carlos Bautista Tafolla, a local representative for the movement, confirmed in an interview with Azucena Uresti on Radio Fórmula that the Michoacán Congress has received the nomination of Grecia Quiroz as the new mayor, which, he said, he expects to be approved no later than this Wednesday.

“There is no better person to lead this presidency. Grecia is a very experienced and strong woman, and she has been with us from the beginning. (…) It was a very easy decision; very easy, I mean, because there were no objections, we all agreed,” she stated.

This Tuesday, November 4, the Michoacán Congress suspended its ordinary session until further notice due to the protests that have taken place following the assassination of the former mayor. However, Representative Fabiola Alanís, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), confirmed that the Uruapan city council nominated Quiroz as the new head of government.

“We have expressed our unconditional support, and I, in particular, have expressed my solidarity to Grecia and told her that she can count on the State Congress and that she has our full support to ensure the governability of Uruapan,” she said in an interview with the media.

For his part, Juan Manzo, Undersecretary of Government of Michoacán and brother of the slain former mayor, ruled out any intention of running for mayor of the municipality.

“Politically, I wasn’t a member of the (Sombrero) movement; I had some agreement with them, many of them are friends, I appreciate them, but the decision will be made directly from within. The law establishes a procedure; some candidates can run, and the truth is that I wouldn’t be in that position; I prefer to respect the decision of the colleagues and friends who founded their independent movement,” he said in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva for Radio Fórmula.

In a message posted on Carlos Manzo’s Facebook account, his wife, Grecia Quiroz, called for peaceful demonstrations in Uruapan and throughout Michoacán, and announced that she would be holding several meetings to discuss governance in the municipality.

“I am in favor of continuing to raise our voices, of continuing this fight. We will take up Carlos’s legacy, we will move forward with our independent Sombrero movement, you can be sure of that. We will fight, we will raise our voices with whomever we need to, we will demand justice,” he said.
