During the first thirteen months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s term, eleven mayors have been assassinated in different parts of the country, revealing a worrying trend of targeted violence against local authorities.
The hardest-hit states are Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacán, with three cases each, highlighting the lack of security guarantees in the most conflict-ridden municipalities.
The figure, documented by Dossier 22, underscores institutional vulnerability in the face of organized crime, especially in regions where mayors have publicly denounced the federal government’s neglect.
The most recent case is that of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, who was murdered during a local festival. Manzo had repeatedly requested federal support to contain the violence in his municipality, without receiving a response.
His death adds to a list that includes mayors from Guerrero, Oaxaca, San Luis PotosÃ, Hidalgo, and other states, all victims of an environment where holding office has become a life sentence.
The image below, produced by Dossier, shows the faces, names, and dates of the eleven murdered mayors. It is a stark portrait of a crisis that demands urgent responses and a national strategy to protect local authorities.
