PISAFLORES, HIDALGO – The mayor of Pisaflores, Miguel Bahena Solórzano, 47, was murdered on Monday, October 20th, in front of his home in the community of La Estancia.
According to news reports, the attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. when two men on a motorcycle fired directly at the mayor, a member of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM). According to reports, he was shot at least five times.
Bahena Solórzano was immediately taken to a private clinic, where doctors confirmed he was no longer showing vital signs. Following the attack, a security operation was deployed in the area; however, no arrests have been reported.
The Green Ecologist Party of Mexico condemned the murder and demanded an immediate and transparent investigation. In a statement, PVEM state leader Avelino Tovar Iglesias said:
“With deep consternation, we lament the murder of the mayor of Pisaflores, Miguel Bahena Solórzano. We express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Pisaflores.”
The party emphasized that violence cannot be allowed to continue undermining democracy and community security.
For his part, Hidalgo Governor Julio Menchaca expressed his condolences on social media:
“I regret the death of Miguel Bahena, mayor of Pisaflores. I express my solidarity and condolences to his loved ones in response to this loss. May he rest in peace.”
From the Federal Congress, PRI coordinator Rubén Moreira questioned the state government’s ability to address the security crisis and the effects of the rains in Hidalgo, stating that the murder “reinforces the argument of incapable and negligent authorities.”
In the same vein, PRI Senator Carolina Viggiano lamented the murder of the mayor and urged people not to normalize violence:
“We cannot allow this to happen and act as if nothing were happening. It is reprehensible, and the people of Hidalgo must demand justice for this and many other crimes that remain unpunished.”
Hours before his murder, Miguel Bahena had posted a video on social media reporting damage from the recent rains in Pisaflores. He reported that 30 homes, as well as schools, water infrastructure, and roads, were damaged, and warned that 90% of the roads in the municipality’s 52 communities were severely damaged.
“Our machinery continues to work, and that of the Federal Government also continues to work. We are very grateful for this support,” he said in what would be his last public message.
