Eduardo Pozos Pérez, the mayor-elect of Xico, Veracruz and member of the Morena party, made history over the weekend by marrying his partner, Alejandro Augusto Meza, in a high-profile ceremony held in Coatepec on Saturday, October 19, 2025. The event marked a significant moment for LGBTQ+ visibility in Mexican politics, as Pozos is the first openly gay municipal president in Veracruz.

Photos of the wedding, which featured a lavish setup and drew guests from across the region, quickly circulated on social media. Pozos shared his joy online, writing, “With the people I love and with everyone, I show affection and respect—this will always be the case.” He also expressed disappointment that his happiness was being used by some to denigrate his character.

The ceremony sparked mixed reactions. While many celebrated the union as a milestone for equality and inclusion, others criticized the timing, noting that it occurred amid severe flooding in parts of Veracruz that left at least 14 people dead. Critics argued that the mayor-elect should have postponed the event out of respect for the ongoing emergency.

Pozos defended his decision, stating that personal happiness should not be politicized and that his commitment to public service remains unchanged. LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, including Orgullo Xalapa, praised the wedding as a “step toward real equality” and called for greater acceptance of diverse identities in public life.

As Pozos prepares to take office in Xico, his marriage stands as both a personal milestone and a public statement on the evolving landscape of Mexican politics and social norms.
