Rafael Marín Mollinedo, Customs Chief and AMLO Ally, Eyes Quintana Roo Governorship Amid Luxury Property Revelations

Rafael Marín Mollinedo, Director of Mexico’s National Customs Agency and a longtime confidant of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is drawing attention not only for his political ambitions but also for his growing real estate portfolio in Cancún.

Marín Mollinedo reportedly owns a luxury apartment valued at 15.5 million pesos in Shark Tower, a 20-story high-rise in Puerto Cancún known for its opulence. The tower boasts three swimming pools, a private marina, and an 18-hole golf course, offering residents panoramic views of the Caribbean and access to exclusive amenities.

The customs chief’s Shark Tower residence is just one of several properties he is said to own in the Cancún area, raising questions about the source of his wealth and the transparency of public officials’ assets. While no formal charges have been brought against him, the revelations have sparked public debate, especially as Marín Mollinedo positions himself as a potential candidate for governor of Quintana Roo under the ruling Morena party.

A founding member of Morena and a key figure in López Obrador’s inner circle, Marín Mollinedo has held various strategic roles, including overseeing special economic zones and customs reform. His close ties to the former president and his deep roots in the region make him a formidable contender in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

Critics argue that his real estate holdings contrast sharply with Morena’s populist ethos, while supporters claim his experience and loyalty to the party make him an ideal candidate to continue the Fourth Transformation agenda in the state.

As the 2027 elections approach, Marín Mollinedo’s dual image—as a seasoned public servant and a man of considerable means—will likely remain a focal point in Quintana Roo’s political landscape.
