Progreso, Yucatán — Former mayor Julián Zacarías Curi, who led the coastal municipality of Progreso from 2018 to 2024 under the National Action Party (PAN), is now at the center of a growing political scandal involving alleged acts of corruption and illicit enrichment.

Local legislator María Esther Magadán Alonzo, representing the Morena party, announced plans to file formal complaints against Zacarías Curi with the Auditoría Superior del Estado de Yucatán (ASEY). The accusations include misuse of public funds, establishment of family-run businesses disguised as legal operations, and involvement in fuel trafficking. A federal operation conducted on September 12 reportedly uncovered over 180,000 liters of illicit fuel stored on property linked to the former mayor.

In addition to the fuel-related charges, Zacarías Curi is also accused of granting permits and donating municipal reserve land to benefit private interests. One such case involves the construction of a yacht dock on public land, which critics say was approved without proper oversight.

Magadán Alonzo revealed that she received anonymous documents detailing irregularities in the former mayor’s financial dealings, including signs of peculation and influence peddling involving close relatives. She emphasized her commitment to transparency and vowed to keep the public informed of the investigation’s progress.

The Fiscalía Anticorrupción de Yucatán has reportedly reopened its inquiry into Zacarías Curi after an initial dismissal of the case. The renewed investigation aims to pursue accountability and restore public trust in local governance.

As the legal process unfolds, the allegations against Zacarías Curi have sparked debate across Yucatán, raising broader concerns about corruption and oversight in municipal administrations.
