In a major breakthrough for agricultural communities in Michoacán, Mexican authorities have arrested Jhon Mario “N”, alias “El Llanero”, a notorious drug trafficker operating in the Tierra Caliente region. The arrest marks a significant victory for lemon growers, who have long suffered extortion and violence at the hands of organized crime.
The operation, carried out in early October 2025 by federal and state forces, targeted cartel cells responsible for imposing illegal “taxes” on lemon producers. According to Omar García Harfuch, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, El Llanero is not only linked to extortion but also accused of recruiting and training cartel members, further fueling criminal activity in the region.
Authorities revealed that El Llanero maintained control over key routes and production zones, using intimidation and armed enforcement to extract payments from farmers. His capture is expected to ease pressure on local producers and restore a measure of peace to the region.
The arrest follows months of coordinated intelligence work and community reporting. García Harfuch emphasized that the government remains committed to dismantling criminal networks that threaten Mexico’s agricultural economy and rural livelihoods.
Lemon growers in Michoacán, particularly in Apatzingán and Buenavista, have expressed relief and hope that the arrest will lead to long-term security and economic recovery. Many had been forced to abandon their crops or pay exorbitant fees to continue operating.
The government has pledged continued support for affected communities, including increased patrols and legal assistance. As investigations continue, El Llanero faces multiple charges, including organized crime, extortion, and conspiracy.
This arrest represents a turning point in the fight against cartel influence in Michoacán’s agricultural heartland.
