Tabasco authorities have issued an Orange Alert for six municipalities due to rising water levels in the Serrano and Usumacinta rivers, signaling a high risk of flooding in the coming days. The alert, activated by the state’s Civil Protection agency on October 6, follows intense rainfall and runoff from neighboring Guatemala, which are expected to cause river levels to swell beyond critical thresholds.
The affected municipalities include Macuspana, Jonuta, Centla, Tenosique, Balancán, and Emiliano Zapata. These regions, part of the subregions of Los RÃos and Pantanos, are particularly vulnerable due to their low-lying geography. Forecasts predict rainfall between 70 and 150 mm, driven by Tropical Wave No. 36, which could exacerbate river overflow and lead to widespread inundation.
Authorities have urged residents in at-risk areas to evacuate if necessary, secure their homes, and stay away from riverbanks and flooded roads. Temporary shelters have been prepared, and emergency protocols are in place to assist affected communities. The Civil Protection agency also recommends suspending non-essential activities, especially those near water bodies.
Temperatures in the region are expected to range from 23°C to 34°C, with winds from the north and northeast reaching speeds of 15 to 30 km/h. Officials continue to monitor weather patterns in coordination with CONAGUA and local governments to provide timely updates and ensure public safety.
As Tabasco braces for potential flooding, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and take precautionary measures to protect their lives and property. The Orange Alert remains in effect until further notice, with ongoing assessments determining the need for escalation or deactivation.
