Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), launched a fierce public attack on President Claudia Sheinbaum on October 3, 2025, accusing her of abusing power and falsely implicating him in corruption and money laundering. The controversy centers on the recent expropriation of four properties in Campeche, which the state government claims were acquired through illicit means.
The expropriations were carried out under the newly approved “Ley Alito”, a reform to Campeche’s Expropriation Law promoted by Governor Layda Sansores. The law allows the state to seize private land deemed of public utility, with critics arguing it was tailor-made to target Moreno, a former governor of Campeche and current senator.
At a press conference, Sheinbaum defended the move, stating, “What I understand is that these are properties acquired with money laundering from corruption”. Moreno responded sharply, calling the accusations baseless and politically motivated. “This is an abuse of power and a clear attempt to silence opposition,” he said, adding that Sheinbaum’s statements were defamatory and lacked legal foundation.
The PRI leader also criticized the law’s indemnification method, which calculates compensation based on the last transaction value adjusted for inflation, excluding property improvements and market appreciation.
The clash has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2026 electoral cycle, with Moreno framing the expropriations as part of a broader campaign to discredit opposition figures. Legal experts warn the case could set a precedent for property rights and political retaliation in Mexico.
