Mexican authorities reported this Friday, October 3rd, the arrest of a man with several doses of drugs, weapons, and a grenade launcher during an operation in the Azcapotzalco borough, northwest of Mexico City. He is believed to be a member of the Nuevo Imperio Cartel, which operates in Central Mexico
The operation was coordinated between police officers from the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC); agents from the Secretariat of National Defense (Defense), the National Guard (GN), the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), and the federal and local prosecutor’s offices, authorities detailed in a joint statement.
The officers searched a home “used as a drug storage and sales point,” located on Calle Cerrada de Heptano in the Santa Cruz Acayucan neighborhood.
At the scene, a 44-year-old man was arrested in possession of two firearms, a grenade launcher, and various doses of drugs, security agencies added.
The same sources identified the detainee as Arián Michel Zapiain Islas, alias Terry, an alleged member of the criminal group “Los Mal Portados” or “Cártel Nuevo Imperio.”
Authorities attribute to this criminal group the violence stemming from the sale and distribution of drugs, as well as the collection of “drop by drop” loans, linked to violent practices and extortion.
During the operation, officers also seized a grenade launcher, a long gun, a pistol with two magazines, a cardboard box with various firearms, and a vehicle.
In addition, two containers with psychotropic pills and another with several doses of cocaine were seized during the operation, as well as a transparent plastic bag with several wrappers, two plastic containers, and two bags of cocaine.
Agents also found various packages containing marijuana cigarettes, boxes containing the same marijuana, a gram scale, and a bag containing various white, pink, and blue pills.
Finally, the authorities stated in the statement that the action responds to the Mexican government’s Security Cabinet’s commitment to work closely with local authorities “to stop the perpetrators of violence who harm society and prevent drugs from reaching the country’s streets.”
