On Saturday, September 27, 2025, two Defender-class vessels of the Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina, SEMAR) collided during rehearsal maneuvers at the Malecón pier in Veracruz, ahead of the 204th anniversary of the Navy and the 201st anniversary of the Promulgation of the Constitution of 1824. The incident occurred in the morning hours and was captured on video by nearby tourists, who shared footage showing one boat riding over the other before striking the pier in an area without spectators.

According to official statements from SEMAR and the First Naval Region, two naval personnel sustained minor injuries that did not endanger their physical integrity. They were promptly treated by Sanidad Naval medical teams on site. No civilian injuries were reported.

The collision happened during a high-speed maneuver intended to simulate tactical operations for the upcoming October 4 commemorative ceremony. Witnesses described the impact as sudden and forceful, with one vessel failing to avoid the other during a turn. Both boats were immediately removed from the water and placed under technical inspection. They remain out of service pending the outcome of an internal review.

SEMAR has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the mishap and reinforce safety protocols for future demonstrations. Despite the accident, officials confirmed that preparations for the October 4 event remain on schedule.

The incident has sparked discussions about the risks involved in public military exhibitions and the importance of rigorous training and oversight. While the injuries were minor, the collision serves as a reminder of the precision required in naval operations, especially during ceremonial rehearsals.
