Zacatecas has solidified its position as Mexico’s leading mineral-producing state, according to recent data released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) in September 2025. The state has shown significant growth in the extraction of key minerals, including gold, silver, lead, and zinc, reinforcing its strategic importance in the country’s mining sector.
INEGI’s report highlights that Zacatecas accounted for over 30% of Mexico’s total silver production in 2024, maintaining its long-standing reputation as the nation’s silver capital. Gold production also saw a notable increase of 12% compared to the previous year, driven by expanded operations in municipalities such as Mazapil and Concepción del Oro. Meanwhile, lead and zinc outputs rose by 9% and 11%, respectively, fueled by technological upgrades and investment in sustainable mining practices.
The state’s mining boom is supported by favorable geology, robust infrastructure, and a skilled labor force. International companies and domestic firms continue to invest in Zacatecas, citing regulatory stability and access to global markets. Governor Ricardo Monreal Ávila praised the sector’s performance, noting that mining contributes significantly to local employment and public revenue.
Zacatecas’ consolidation as Mexico’s top mineral producer comes amid rising global demand for metals used in electronics, renewable energy, and construction. The state’s output plays a crucial role in supplying raw materials for lithium batteries, solar panels, and industrial alloys.
INEGI’s findings underscore the importance of continued investment in safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement to ensure long-term sustainability. As Mexico seeks to balance economic growth with ecological responsibility, Zacatecas stands as a model for modern mining development.
