In a high-profile corruption case that has rocked Sonora, former Morena official Juan Alan Araujo Ahumada and his wife Andrea Fernanda āNā stand accused of embezzling 106 million pesos from public funds earmarked for the remodeling of Hermosilloās Municipal Market #1.
Araujo Ahumada, who served as Subdirector of Accounting for the Consejo Estatal de Concertación para la Obra Pública (CECOP), allegedly orchestrated the diversion of funds between September 2023 and March 2025. The money was intended for a major infrastructure project that began in December 2023 and was officially delivered in May 2025, though the market remains closed due to incomplete work.
Investigations by the FiscalĆa General de Justicia de Sonora revealed that the stolen funds were used to finance an extravagant wedding held in Los Lagos, one of Hermosilloās most exclusive residential areas, and to purchase a luxury mansion in a high-value neighborhood. The wedding reportedly hosted hundreds of guests and took place in the same area where celebrities like Carin León and Natanael Cano reside.
While Andrea Fernanda has been detained and placed under preventive custody, facing charges of illicit enrichment and embezzlement, Araujo Ahumada remains a fugitive. Authorities issued a formal Presumed Administrative Responsibility Report on August 14, 2025, but were unable to locate him, prompting notification by edict.
The case has sparked outrage across Sonora, highlighting ongoing concerns about misuse of public funds and lack of accountability. The next hearing for Andrea Fernanda is scheduled for September 12, 2025, while efforts to apprehend Araujo Ahumada continue.
