Martin Arellano: A Fierce Voice Silenced by Systemic Failure

RIP Martin Arellano

On September 5, 2025, Mexican journalist Martín Arellano Solorio died of heart failure at the IMSS General Hospital in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, after a harrowing five-hour ordeal seeking medical attention.

A vocal supporter of Mexico’s Fourth Transformation (4T) and a regular contributor to Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning broadcasts, Arellano was known for his fierce defense of the ruling Morena party and his incendiary rhetoric against its critics—including public wishes that opponents suffer fatal heart attacks.

Arellano’s final hours were documented in real time on social media. At 12:34 p.m. on September 4, he posted his first distress message, warning of a probable heart attack and criticizing the failure of IMSS’s “Código Infarto” protocol. Despite tagging IMSS director Zoé Robledo and President Sheinbaum, his pleas went unanswered.

By 2:45 p.m., he sought help at the local Red Cross, only to be redirected to IMSS’s Zone Hospital No. 3. His last post, at 5:53 p.m., read: “From my hallway. Urgent status,” accompanied by a photo of his stretcher waiting in a corridor.

According to IMSS statements, Arellano arrived at the hospital at 4:28 p.m. and was treated for symptoms of heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Despite initial stabilization, he suffered multiple cardiac arrests. After 30 minutes of resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m. on September 5.

Arellano’s death sparked outrage and debate over Mexico’s public health system and the politicization of medical care. His legacy remains divisive: a passionate advocate for the 4T movement, whose final moments exposed the very institutional shortcomings he once defended.
