On September 1, 2025, President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered her first state-of-the-nation address at Mexico’s historic National Palace, marking a pivotal moment in her presidency and in the country’s political landscape.

As Mexico’s first female president, Sheinbaum’s speech was both symbolic and substantive, reflecting on her administration’s achievements and outlining future priorities.

Sheinbaum, who took office in October 2024, emphasized continuity with the progressive agenda of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She credited his social programs with lifting over 13 million Mexicans out of poverty between 2018 and 2024, and pledged to deepen the “Fourth Transformation” movement he began.

Her 70-minute address highlighted infrastructure investments in schools, hospitals, railways, and energy systems, which she described as essential to both economic growth and human dignity. She also reaffirmed her commitment to women’s rights, stating that her presidency represents not just a personal achievement, but a collective milestone for all Mexican women.

On foreign policy, Sheinbaum addressed tensions with the United States, particularly under President Donald Trump’s renewed administration. She defended Mexico’s sovereignty, rejecting any foreign interference, and stressed cooperation without subordination in bilateral relations.

Notably absent from her speech were Mexico’s ongoing struggles with cartel violence and concerns over democratic backsliding. Critics argue that her administration has yet to confront these issues head-on, despite rising concerns about executive overreach.

Still, Sheinbaum’s approval ratings remain high—hovering between 70% and 80%—making her one of the most popular presidents in recent Mexican history. Her address, delivered with optimism and resolve, set the tone for a presidency that aims to balance legacy with transformation, and ambition with accountability.
