Heavy Rains Cause Severe Flooding in Guadalajara, Jalisco

On August 19, 2025, Guadalajara, Jalisco was hit by intense rainfall that triggered widespread flooding across the Metropolitan Area, paralyzing traffic, disrupting public transportation, and damaging infrastructure. The downpour began early in the morning and continued for several hours, overwhelming drainage systems and flooding key roadways.

Major Affected Areas: Flooding was reported in several critical zones, including:

  • Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas, where water accumulation halted traffic and submerged vehicles
  • Retorno de Avenida Mariano Otero and Anillo Periférico, which were closed due to high water levels
  • Paso a desnivel de 8 de Julio e Inglaterra, and Avenida Colón at López de Legazpi, which became impassable
  • Monte Morelos, Aguilar Figueroa, and Avenida La Paz at Federalismo, where flooding reached dangerous levels

Transport Disruptions The Sistema de Tren Eléctrico Urbano (SITEUR) suspended service on Line 1 between the 18 de Marzo and Isla Raza stations due to water damage. The Mi Macro Calzada line was also halted near Lázaro Cárdenas, stranding commuters during peak hours.

Weather Conditions The storm was accompanied by strong winds and hail, particularly in neighborhoods like Jardines del Bosque, Los Arcos, and Niños Héroes, compounding the damage and increasing the risk of accidents.

Emergency Response Local authorities deployed Civil Protection units and firefighters to assist stranded residents and clear blocked drains. The Secretariat of Transportation issued safety advisories urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid flooded zones and use elevated walkways.

As cleanup efforts continue, officials are urging residents to remain cautious and prepare for additional rainfall forecasted later in the week.
