In a major operation targeting fuel theft, Mexican authorities seized 44,000 liters (approximately 11,600 gallons) of illegally extracted hydrocarbon in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, on July 31, 2025. The bust occurred along the old Monclova–Saltillo highway, where a coordinated task force uncovered a clandestine fuel tapping site connected to a pipeline.
The operation involved the State Police of Coahuila, Municipal Police of Ramos Arizpe, the Mexican Army, and personnel from the Federal Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection. Five individuals—identified only as Elías “N”, César “N”, Luis “N”, Juan “N”, and Rafael “N”—were caught in the act and taken into custody. They now face federal charges for crimes against national infrastructure.
Authorities confiscated a tanker truck, a tractor-trailer, and three private vehicles used in the illegal operation. A clandestine tap was found directly connected to a fuel pipeline, which has since been secured and placed under surveillance to prevent further extraction.
Fuel theft, commonly referred to as huachicoleo, poses serious risks to Mexico’s energy infrastructure and public safety. Beyond the economic losses, these illegal operations often lead to environmental hazards and violent confrontations. The government has intensified its crackdown on such activities since 2018, following deadly incidents like the Tlahuelilpan explosion in Hidalgo.
This latest bust underscores the ongoing challenge of protecting Mexico’s energy resources. Authorities have pledged to continue interagency collaboration and intelligence-led operations to dismantle fuel theft networks across the country.
