His visit to the Prada store outraged millions of Mexicans, given that, first of all, the Morena party has said that “there can’t be rich rulers and poor people,” not forgetting its slogan “The Poor First.” And it’s alleged that with his salary, he can’t possibly afford such luxuries, so… Where does the money come from?
Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, widely known as “Andy Jr,” is the son of former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and currently serves as Secretary of Organization for the Morena party. On July 28th, 2025, Andy Jr became the center of public scrutiny after being photographed exiting a Prada store in Tokyo’s upscale Aoyama district. The images, shared by journalist Claudio Ochoa, show López Beltrán accompanied by two individuals, one of whom carried a branded shopping bag.
The visit drew criticism due to the contrast between his luxury shopping and Morena’s long-standing discourse on austerity and modesty in public service. The timing was particularly sensitive, as President Claudia Sheinbaum had recently emphasized that “power must be exercised with humility”.
Prada, a high-end Italian fashion house, offers items ranging from designer clothing to accessories, with prices reaching over 500,000 pesos for exclusive pieces. López Beltrán’s presence at such a venue fueled debate over political figures’ lifestyles and the expectations of public conduct.
While Andy Jr has not publicly addressed the incident, the episode has reignited discussions about transparency, privilege, and the evolving image of Mexico’s political elite.
