Authorities in Veracruz have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the femicide of Irma Hernández Cruz, the retired schoolteacher and taxi driver who was kidnapped and executed by an organized crime group in Álamo Temapache. On July 25, 2025, state police confirmed the arrest of two individuals believed to be directly involved in her abduction and murder.

The suspects, whose identities have not yet been disclosed, were apprehended during a coordinated operation between the Veracruz Attorney General’s Office and local law enforcement. According to preliminary reports, both men are linked to the criminal group known as Mafia Veracruzana, which has been implicated in extortion and violent acts targeting public transport workers in the region.

Irma Hernández’s case drew national attention after a video circulated showing her kneeling and delivering a coerced message under duress from armed men. Her body was later found in a rural area between Álamo and Cerro Azul.

While the arrests mark a step toward justice, critics continue to call out the silence from Governor Rocío Nahle and President Claudia Sheinbaum, who have yet to publicly address the incident. Civil organizations are urging for broader reforms to protect vulnerable workers and combat impunity in Veracruz.
