Jeffrey Lichtman knows exactly what he’s doing, what he’s saying… and to whom he’s saying it. He’s not just any lawyer. He’s one of the most experienced and toughest in the US, an expert in high-profile cases.
Every word he says is calculated. And even more so when he accuses the Mexican government of ties to organized crime.
If he didn’t have evidence, he would never take such risks. He’s not a journalist, an influencer, or a politician campaigning. He’s a high-level litigator in a US federal court. His statements carry great legal and diplomatic weight.
And why is he speaking and not Ovidio? Because everything he says comes from lengthy conversations with his client. Ovidio can’t speak, but his lawyer can. And he’s issuing warnings at the highest level. What he said is relevant and decisive: he accused Mexican military personnel and officials of working with drug traffickers, from a US court!
This could be just the beginning of a judicial bombshell. We could be witnessing the start of something much bigger. This isn’t a media spectacle like AMLO and Sheinbaum’s morning press conferences. It’s the preamble to a case that could shatter the Morena regime from within.
And what did the Mexican government do? Nothing at all! Only send Sheinbaum to Sinaloa to make inconsequential statements flanked by Governor Rocha Moya. Is this how they want to refute what Lichtman says? Rather, they confirm it with an image in which they appear visibly defeated.

Jeffrey Lichtman graduated from Duke University School of Law in 1990 and has since built a distinguished career, as he is one of the few Manhattan criminal defense attorneys recognized in the Bar Association’s Registry of Preeminent Attorneys, according to The National Trial Lawyers.
In 2015, his office began representing individuals in police misconduct cases, as well as sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits, obtaining significant compensation for the victims.
On Tuesday, July 15, President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the defamation lawsuit against attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, the lawyer for Ovidio Guzmán, son of El Chapo, had already been filed with the Presidential Legal Counsel.
And she said it is no longer a relevant issue, because she clearly intends for it not to be part of the narrative and political agenda controlled by the ruling party. Nobody in Morena wants to talk about the subject.
On the contrary, Sheinbaum used her morning press conference to declare that the “opposition” is acting unpatriotically and wants the US to impose 30% tariffs while her administration is doing everything possible to prevent them.
The reality is that Sheinbaum cannot sue Lichtman in Mexico, as it is not admissible at all. She would have to do so in a US court, but if the Mexican President resorted to that, she would risk having what Jeffrey Lichtman said proven.
