Agents from the State Investigation Police (PEI) of the SSP, in coordination with ministerial authorities, arrested Rafael Echazarreta Torres, who serves as president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Mérida, Yucatán.

In a statement, the Ministry of Security indicated that the 46-year-old man, originally from Mexico City, is accused of his alleged involvement in the crime of fraud.

The warrant was issued by the First Control Court of the First Judicial District of the State, stemming from events that occurred in 2023 and 2024, related to commercial transactions of high economic value.

Echazarreta faces a fraud complaint for 12 million pesos, filed by businessman Horacio de Freitas Da Silva.

The complaint filed with the Yucatán Attorney General’s Office alleges that Echazarreta allegedly convinced De Freitas to invest in the company Exportaciones Integrales Mexicanas, promising him 40% of the shares.

According to the businessman, the politician used his image to generate trust, first requesting smaller sums and then larger investments that never generated the promised returns.

The complaint states that the alleged company was seized amid an international dispute and that, despite the documents signed by both parties, the money was never returned.

After unsuccessful attempts to resolve the conflict peacefully, De Freitas formally filed the complaint on December 30, 2024.

The detainee is widely known in the state, having served as a local deputy for Morena and later joined the PRI, where he assumed the leadership of the party in the capital, Mérida.
