The criminal known as “Brother Wang,” a Chinese national considered a key player in the supply of chemical precursors to the CJNG and the Sinaloa Cartel, escaped this Friday, July 11, from his house arrest in Mexico City.
The National Guard guarding him was unable to prevent his escape.
Zhang is accused of trafficking more than 1,000 kg of cocaine, 1,800 kg of fentanyl, and 600 kg of methamphetamine to the United States.
His network operated in the Americas, Europe, China, and Japan. He was wanted by federal courts in New York and Georgia for extradition.
He was captured on October 31, 2024, in Lomas de Santa Fe after months of intelligence gathering. Experts compared him to “El Chapo” because of his importance: “A drug lord like this is worth what a Chapo is worth, he just doesn’t get the same publicity,” said journalist Óscar Balderas.
The Attorney General’s Office reported that Zhi Dong Zhang is a Chinese citizen and uses various nicknames, including “Brother Wang,” “Pancho,” “HeHe,” “Chino,” “GG,” “Kun Li Hernández,” “Chang Li Gong Sun,” “Memo,” among others.
According to authorities, Zhang is accused of exporting and distributing more than 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, 1,800 kilograms of fentanyl, and 600 kilograms of methamphetamine. He operated in the United States, Central and South America, Europe, China, and Japan.
