On July 9th, 2025, a disturbing case of child abuse in Hidalgo, Mexico, led to the criminal prosecution of Morena congresswoman Alhely Medina Hernández and two accomplices. The charges stem from allegations of sexual abuse and aggravated rape against two minors in the municipality of Zimapán, dating back to April 2022.

Medina, who had been serving as a local legislator for Morena, was implicated alongside her brother-in-law, Arturo Williams Trejo, and his wife, Bertha Eva Medina. The victims, nieces of Williams and Bertha, identified all three adults as perpetrators. The minors’ mother, Jacqueline, filed the initial complaint, which triggered investigations by both the Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado de Hidalgo (PGJEH) and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes of Violence Against Women and Human Trafficking (Fevimtra).

During a court hearing in Pachuca, Judge Jesús Anim Ope Islas ordered preventive detention for Williams and Bertha, while Medina was granted provisional freedom under strict conditions, including a travel ban and mandatory monthly court appearances. All three defendants denied the charges, claiming they were not responsible for the minors during the alleged abuse period. However, medical evidence presented by the victims’ legal team included biopsies and tests confirming physical trauma and a positive result for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in one child.

The case has sparked national outrage and prompted Morena’s National Commission of Honor and Justice to suspend Medina’s political rights and remove her from party roles. She later requested an indefinite leave from her legislative duties, which the Hidalgo Congress approved.

As investigations continue, two additional suspects remain fugitives, with Interpol Red Notices issued for their arrest. The victims and their mother are currently under federal protection in a secure shelter.
