Three months ago, on April 1, 2025, Mexican executive Iván Espinosa officially assumed the role of Global CEO and President of Nissan Motor Corporation, becoming the first Mexican to lead the Japanese automotive giant at a global level. The announcement was made during a board meeting held in Yokohama, Japan, on March 11, 2025, where Nissan’s leadership confirmed the departure of former CEO Makoto Uchida and ushered in a new era under Espinosa’s guidance.

Espinosa, born in 1979, is a graduate of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), where he earned degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration. He also completed a marketing diploma at Northwestern University. His career at Nissan began in 2003 as a product specialist in Mexico, and over two decades, he rose through the ranks, holding key positions in Thailand, Europe, and Japan, including Chief Planning Officer in 2024.

His appointment comes at a critical juncture for Nissan, which is facing financial challenges, including projected net losses of ¥80 billion (approximately USD 540 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025. Espinosa has pledged to revitalize the company’s strategy, particularly in North America, and emphasized a renewed focus on electrification, product innovation, and cost optimization.

During his inaugural press conference in Yokohama, Espinosa stated, “I sincerely believe Nissan has much more potential than we’re seeing today,” signaling his commitment to transformation and long-term growth.

His leadership marks a proud moment for Mexico and Latin America, highlighting the global impact of regional talent in shaping the future of the automotive industry.
