More than 50 people were trapped in a power outage at Xplor recreational theme park in Playa del Carmen.
On June 30, 2025, a sudden power outage at the Xplor theme park in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, left more than 50 tourists temporarily trapped in one of the park’s most popular attractions: the underground river. The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when a failure in the park’s electrical system caused a complete loss of lighting inside a cavern with artificial illumination.
Visitors, who were mid-way through the subterranean water route, found themselves in total darkness and unable to navigate the rocky, narrow passageways. The lack of visibility and confined conditions led to moments of panic among some guests. Fortunately, one of the trapped individuals managed to contact emergency services, prompting a swift response from local authorities, including Protección Civil and the fire department.
Grupo Xcaret, the operator of Xplor, later confirmed the incident in a public statement, describing it as a “momentary interruption” in the power supply. They emphasized that the situation was addressed immediately and that all guests were safely evacuated without injuries. Despite the company’s reassurances, the event sparked concern on social media, with some users criticizing the park’s preparedness for such emergencies.
Authorities conducted an inspection and found no further risks, allowing the park to resume normal operations shortly after. While no one was harmed, the incident highlighted the importance of robust safety protocols in adventure tourism settings, especially those involving enclosed or potentially hazardous environments.
