Martha Laura Mendoza Mendoza was the municipal president of Tepalcatepec, a town in the western Mexican state of Michoacán. A dedicated public servant, she was elected in 2021 after a tightly contested race, winning by just one vote. Her victory was confirmed following a full recount, and she assumed office with a focus on community development, particularly supporting women, children, and education initiatives.

Known for her accessibility and warmth, Mendoza was deeply involved in local events and often organized activities for children and the elderly. Her leadership style was hands-on, and she was admired for her commitment to improving public services and fostering a sense of unity in the community. She was re-elected in 2024 under the Morena and Labor Party coalition, although it remains unclear whether she had officially begun a new term.

Tragically, on June 17, 2025, Mendoza and her husband, Ulises Sánchez Ochoa, were fatally shot outside their home in what authorities described as a direct attack. Their son was also injured in the incident. The assassination sent shockwaves through Tepalcatepec, prompting the closure of municipal offices and schools and sparking renewed concerns about the safety of public officials in regions affected by organized crime.

The community responded with an outpouring of grief. Residents held vigils, and a public homage was organized at the municipal building. Many remembered Mendoza as a kind and courageous leader who never requested personal security, instead advocating for the safety of all citizens.

Her death marked the sixth killing of a municipal leader during the current administration, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by local governments in Mexico. Authorities have launched an investigation, and calls for justice continue to echo throughout the region.
