Malinche is, perhaps, one of the most controversial figures in the history of Mexico: during the Conquest, she was one of the first translators who helped the Spaniards negotiate with Moctezuma, the Aztec emperor. Many Mexicans still consider her a traitor to her people, but this musical shines light on her perspective and the conquistadors, mostly Hernán Cortés, the expedition leader.

Photo: courtesySince its premiere in Madrid in 2022, it has captivated more than half a million people with its spectacular music and ambitious production. Like the legend of the Malinche herself, this musical seeks to celebrate diversity and build bridges between cultures with more than 60 artists on stage combining flamenco, urban dance and singing.

What is Malinche by Nacho Cano about?

This musical theater piece celebrates Mexican roots as well as the union of two worlds.

It narrates the life of this intriguing character from the Spanish conquest- from her childhood until her path crossed that of Hernán Cortés and Moctezuma.

It portrays the characters with a little more sarcasm than what we learned in school: conquistadors who were ambitious and self-centered and not as noble as they would have us believe. With eye-catching scenery, fabulous choreography and catchy music, this is a remix of history.

To create this musical, Nacho Cano also collaborated with Spanish and Mexican artists, including: Alex González of Maná, La Banda El Recodo and El Tri.
