Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum described her recent meeting with Christopher Landau, the newly appointed U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, as primarily a courtesy visit.

The discussion, held at Palacio Nacional, focused on strengthening Mexico-U.S. relations, with particular emphasis on security and migration policies.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum highlighted that Landau’s visit was an opportunity for him to formally introduce himself in his new role within the Trump administration. While the meeting was largely diplomatic, Sheinbaum took the opportunity to express Mexico’s firm opposition to the anti-immigrant raids conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles. She emphasized that these actions negatively impact Mexican workers and could harm the U.S. economy.

Sheinbaum stated, “We do not agree with the use of raids to detain people who work honestly in the United States. This not only affects individuals but also damages the economy of the country.” She reiterated Mexico’s commitment to defending the rights of Mexican migrants and ensuring their protection amid growing tensions over U.S. immigration policies.

The meeting also touched on bilateral cooperation in security matters, with Sheinbaum presenting Mexico’s latest security advancements. She stressed the importance of collaboration between both nations to address organized crime and border security challenges.

Additionally, Sheinbaum confirmed that discussions are underway regarding the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Mexico. This visit is expected to further define the diplomatic agenda between the two countries, particularly in light of recent trade and immigration disputes.

Despite the tense backdrop of migrant protests and economic concerns, Sheinbaum maintained that Mexico remains committed to fostering a constructive and respectful relationship with the U.S. She concluded by stating that both governments aim to strengthen diplomatic ties and work toward mutual cooperation.
