Michelin stated that it will close its Queretaro plant and continue operations at its branch in León, Guanajuato.
Michelin will close its tire production plant in Querétaro by the end of 2025, according to Reuters.
“Ending the history of our first plant in Mexico has been one of the most difficult decisions we have ever had to make. It was decided after evaluating all possible alternatives,” said Matthieu Aubron, CEO of Michelin for the Mexico and Central America region.
To finalize the plant closure, the company will begin reducing tire production this year; it has also guaranteed that it will support the 480 employees affected by this decision.
“Support measures will be announced, including a financial severance package and benefits, assistance in preparing for a new job search, and an offer of external training to improve or acquire new skills that will increase employability in line with labor market demands,” reads a statement cited by Reforma.
According to the French company Michelin, the closure of its plant is since it has become obsolete and cannot be converted into a competitive facility.
The decision was made as a “last resort,” driven by changes in the passenger car and light truck tire market and following a thorough review of the company’s operations, Michelin Mexico and Central America said.
“The company has decided to halt production at the Querétaro plant to give management time, this week, to engage in collective discussions with employees,” it reported.
The Querétaro plant currently produces fewer than 0.5 million BFGoodrich brand tires per year for passenger cars and light trucks, and has a production shop for retreading treads for truck tires.
According to the Michelin Mexico and Central America website, the facility was Michelin’s first industrial site in Mexico and has been in operation for more than 20 years.
Michelin México y Centroamérica ha informado a empleados, clientes, comunidad y demás partes interesadas que la Compañía comenzará a reducir la producción de llantas en su planta de Querétaro, con el objetivo de finalizar sus operaciones industriales para finales de 2025.
