Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has recently made a public request to stop being referred to as “Andy.” As the Secretary of Organization for the political party Morena, López Beltrán has emphasized that the nickname diminishes the significance of his name and his father’s legacy.

Born in Macuspana, Tabasco, on August 21, 1986, López Beltrán currently serves as Secretary of Organization for Morena. He has held this position since October 1, 2024.

During an episode of the podcast La Moreniza, hosted by Morena’s national president, Luisa María Alcalde, López Beltrán expressed his frustration with the widespread use of the diminutive. He stated that his name is a source of pride, as it connects him to what he considers the best president Mexico has had. He argued that calling him “Andy” undermines that legacy and distances him from his full identity.

His remarks come amid political tensions, particularly following Morena’s electoral setbacks in Durango and Veracruz. López Beltrán believes that opposition figures deliberately avoid using his full name because they recognize the weight it carries. He pointed out that political adversaries such as Alejandro Moreno and Rubén Moreira refrained from addressing him properly, suggesting that they fear the influence associated with his name.

The request has sparked reactions across social media, with some critics mocking his insistence on being called by his full name. Businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego sarcastically suggested that if “Andy” is unacceptable, López Beltrán should instead be referred to as “Junior”. Others have responded with memes and commentary, turning the issue into a trending topic.

Despite the controversy, López Beltrán remains firm in his stance, urging the public and media to respect his preference and acknowledge his role within Morena without resorting to diminutive.
