Former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) made a public appearance today, June 1, 2025, in Palenque, Chiapas, to cast his vote in the historic judicial election. This marks his first public outing since leaving office in 2024, breaking his self-imposed retreat from political life.

AMLO arrived at a polling station in Palenque around 9:50 a.m., where he exercised his right to vote in a process that allows Mexican citizens to directly elect judges, magistrates, and Supreme Court ministers for the first time in the nation’s history. The judicial election stems from a constitutional reform he championed during his presidency, aiming to democratize the judiciary and enhance transparency in the legal system.

Speaking briefly to the media and supporters after voting, López Obrador emphasized the significance of this election, calling it an unprecedented moment for Mexico. “Never in the history of our country has the people directly decided on the judiciary. This is the first time, and that is why I wanted to participate in this historic election,” he stated. He also expressed his satisfaction with the democratic process and reiterated his support for current President Claudia Sheinbaum, whom he praised as “the best president in the world”.

Since leaving office, AMLO has largely remained out of the public eye, dedicating his time to writing a book on Mexico’s cultural heritage. He mentioned that he has only left his residence in Palenque three times since stepping down. His participation in today’s election underscores his continued commitment to the political transformation he initiated during his tenure.

This judicial election is expected to shape Mexico’s legal landscape, with over 881 judicial positions being decided by popular vote.
