While everyone is staring at the #CensorshipLaw, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum sent another legislative bombshell to the Senate.
This initiative seeks to reform the Federal Law on Economic Competition and the Law on Parastatal Entities.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s initiative proposes significant reforms to the Federal Law on Economic Competition and the Federal Law on Parastatal Entities. Key changes include replacing the Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) with the National Antimonopoly Commission, a decentralized agency under the Ministry of Economy.
The initiative aims to strengthen antitrust enforcement, streamline investigative procedures, and enhance penalties for monopolistic practices. It also introduces adjustments in telecommunications and broadcasting regulations. By addressing structural and procedural inefficiencies, the proposal seeks to foster fair competition and modernize Mexico’s economic framework. Legislative approval remains pending.
Sheinbaum seeks to create a new “National Antitrust Commission” to replace the current COFECE (National Antitrust Commission)… but directly subordinate to the Executive Branch.

What does Sheinbaum’s initiative propose regarding Economic Competition?
- Completely reorganize the regulatory authority
- Strengthen powers to combat monopolies (in favor of the interests of the ruling party)
- Regulate content and platforms under the competition umbrella
- And yes… more changes in telecommunications and broadcasting (again)
And pay close attention to the details.
The Presidency will appoint the commissioners and also the president of the new Commission.
And then they will have to be approved by a Senate dominated by the ruling party.
