Expat Diaries: Black Women Share Why They Decided To Make Mexico Home—And How You Can Too

Despite growing political tensions, Black women are still finding a haven within Mexico’s borders and doing their part to become one with the local communities.

It’s no secret that in the last few months, political relations between the United States and Mexico have been tumultuous. So, it’s no wonder that many Black Americans would question the decision to move south of the border. However, such tensions don’t outweigh the long-standing history between the Black diaspora and Mexico. The first enslaved Africans arrived on Mexico’s shores as far back as the 16th century, with those people and their descendants contributing greatly to the country’s vibrant culture. You could say it’s one of the reasons why many Black Americans often feel at home there.

From the capital of Mexico City to Playa del Carmen, Merida, and beyond, more and more Black people are choosing to call Mexico home, and Black women are leading the charge. You can find them educating the youth, raising families, starting businesses, sharing resources, and pouring back into the local communities that welcomed them with open arms.
