In a significant operation against fuel theft, Mexican authorities seized 10 million liters of hydrocarbons in Tamaulipas, marking a historic blow to illegal trafficking networks.
The operation, led by the Navy (Semar), the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), and the National Guard (GN), took place in Altamira, Tamaulipas. It involved extensive intelligence and investigative efforts to dismantle organized crime networks involved in hydrocarbon trafficking.
The seizure included 192 containers of diesel, 23 tractor-trailers, firearms, and computer equipment. Authorities also intercepted a Singapore-flagged vessel, the Challenge Procyon, which had arrived at the port of Tampico on March 19, allegedly carrying lubricating oil additives. However, investigations revealed its connection to illicit hydrocarbon activities.
This operation is part of Mexico’s broader strategy to combat fuel theft, commonly referred to as “huachicol.” The term encompasses activities such as pipeline tapping, hijacking tanker trucks, and storing stolen fuel for resale on the black market. Fuel theft poses significant challenges to Mexico’s energy security and economic stability.
The success of this operation highlights the importance of interagency collaboration. Federal forces, including the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) and the Ministry of Security and Civilian Protection (SSPC), played crucial roles in ensuring the operation’s effectiveness. Authorities emphasized their commitment to upholding national security and combating organized crime.
This seizure represents a major step in protecting Mexico’s energy resources and disrupting criminal networks. It underscores the need for continued vigilance and coordinated efforts to address the complex issue of fuel theft.
