On March 9th, 2025, a photograph emerged that quickly became a topic of discussion in Mexican political circles. The image featured several high-ranking politicians, including the son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), walking together in a public event. Notably, President Claudia Sheinbaum was seen walking behind the group, seemingly ignored by the others.
The photograph was taken during a public event in Mexico City, where various political figures gathered to commemorate a significant occasion. The image captured a moment where AMLO’s son, along with other prominent politicians, appeared to be engaged in conversation, while President Sheinbaum trailed behind, not included in the interaction. This visual sparked debates and discussions about the dynamics within the political elite and the perceived sidelining of the President.
Critics and analysts quickly weighed in on the photograph, interpreting it as a sign of internal divisions and power struggles within the ruling party. Some argued that the image symbolized a lack of respect and recognition for President Sheinbaum, who had recently taken office as Mexico’s first female president. Others suggested that the photograph was a mere snapshot of a moment and should not be overanalyzed.
Supporters of President Sheinbaum defended her leadership and downplayed the significance of the photograph. They emphasized her achievements in her first 100 days in office, including the continuation and expansion of social welfare programs initiated by her predecessor, AMLO. They argued that the image did not reflect the true dynamics of her administration and that she remained a respected and influential leader.
The incident forced Adán Augusto López, Ricardo Monreal, Manuel Velasco, and Luisa MarÃa Alcalde to publicly apologize to the president.
Velasco even admitted that the situation warranted an emergency meeting with Adán Augusto López and Monreal.
Also appearing in the photograph were Green Party politician Carlos Puente, Bank of Mexico Governor Victoria RodrÃguez Ceja, and Morena’s Organization Secretary Andrés Manuel López Beltrán. The latter has not issued a public apology.
Sunday’s event has been interpreted within the political class as the clearest evidence that loyalties and power within the 4T coalition are divided between Sheinbaum and López Beltrán.
The incident highlighted the complexities of political relationships and the challenges faced by President Sheinbaum in navigating the intricate landscape of Mexican politics. It also underscored the importance of public perception and the impact of visual media in shaping political narratives.
