The recent affiliation of Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez, a former member of the National Action Party (PAN), to the Morena party, has sparked significant controversy and division within the party. Yunes Márquez, who officially joined Morena on February 18, 2025, has been a polarizing figure due to his past political affiliations and legal issues.

Yunes Márquez’s move to Morena was met with immediate backlash from several prominent party members, including Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle. Nahle has been vocal in her opposition, arguing that Yunes Márquez does not align with Morena’s principles and values. She has publicly stated that Yunes Márquez was a staunch opponent of Morena until recently and does not represent the movement’s ideals.

In response to the controversy, the National Commission of Honesty and Justice (CNHJ) of Morena has initiated a review of Yunes Márquez’s affiliation. The commission, responsible for resolving internal disputes and ensuring adherence to the party’s principles, announced that it would conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his membership.

Governor Nahle has emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of Morena and has called on party members to “protect the movement.” She has argued that allowing Yunes Márquez to join the party would undermine the trust of the party’s base and contradict the values that Morena stands for. Nahle’s stance has been supported by other party members, including Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara, who also expressed his disapproval of Yunes Márquez’s affiliation.

Yunes Márquez, on the other hand, has defended his decision to join Morena, stating that he did so out of alignment with the party’s legislative goals and support for President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration. He has denied any intention to cause internal conflict within the party and has expressed his commitment to contributing positively to Morena’s objectives.

The controversy highlights the challenges Morena faces in balancing inclusivity with maintaining its core values. The outcome of the CNHJ’s review will be crucial in determining the party’s direction and cohesion moving forward.
