With a letter addressed to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, the former interim governor of Chiapas, Willy Ochoa, denounced Rutilio Escandón, now Mexican consul in Miami, for alleged links to drug trafficking.
Ochoa condemned the appointment of Escandón Cadenas as Mexican consul in Miami, made at the beginning of Claudia Sheinbaum’s government.
“It is a serious miscalculation that affects the security of the United States, particularly the fight against organized crime and corruption,” said the PRI member in his letter.
The PRI member criticized that a politician whose government was marked by “negligence, omission and worrying links with organized crime” now has immunity and diplomatic protection.
In addition, he assured that during his administration, Rutilio Escandon did not implement measures to control illegal migration and thus “facilitated” human trafficking between 2018 and 2024.
“Chiapas became a lawless land where mass migration overwhelmed state security, unleashing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis,” he wrote.
With the immigration issue being one of the central axes of the Trump government, the Chiapas politician assured that the lack of action by the now consul left “hundreds of thousands of people adrift, without access to basic services.
Likewise, he left them “exposed to criminal networks that operate with total impunity in the region.”

Ochoa asked President Trump to evaluate the appointment of the Miami consul and the implications of granting asylum and diplomatic immunity to Rutilio Escandón.
“I urge him (Trump) to evaluate whether his (Rutilio Escandón) presence in Miami is aligned with the principles of his government regarding security, the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime,” the message said.
“Accepting him as consul would send a worrying message to the citizens of Chiapas, Florida, and the entire region: that negligence, corruption, and complicity can be rewarded with diplomatic privileges,” Ochoa concluded.
