The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) arrested Edgar Alejandro Villarreal, alias “El Fresa”, in Brownsville, Texas, in possession of 8.8 kilograms of cocaine.

According to documents from the US authorities made public by Jorge Triana, spokesman for the National Action Party (PAN), he is accused of crimes such as conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of narcotics, in addition to being a repeat offender in drug trafficking.

On his X account, the PAN spokesman said this Saturday that “on January 27, Edgar Villarreal, alias “El Fresa”, financial operator of Américo Villarreal Jr. and the current Morena mayor of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, was arrested for drug trafficking.”

“And they still get indignant when they are called the narco-government,” stressed the former federal deputy of the PAN.

In a brief interview with Latinus, Jorge Triana commented that since last Friday, information began to spread on various pages about the arrest of the one who “is indicated as the financial operator of several Morena candidates, mainly the current mayor of Matamoros and Américo Villarreal Jr., who is the superdelegate of Welfare in Tamaulipas.”

“It is necessary to investigate this arrest from top to bottom and not the other way around because this accusation of the narco-government is beginning to be perfected,” he emphasized.

It was revealed on Facebook pages that the arrest took place on January 22.

Since April 2024, various local media have reported that “El Fresa” is identified as a financial operator for Américo Villarreal Jr. —son of the governor of Tamaulipas—and Antonio Granados, the current Morena mayor of Matamoros.

During the last electoral campaign, Villarreal actively participated in events of the current mayor’s team and in actions of the Avanzada Tamaulipas organization, in which he distributed water extracted from a clandestine mill. This fact was denounced at the time by former mayor Mario López.

Morena supporters from Tamaulipas confirmed that La Fresa “covered the accounts of the Avanzada Association (AVA) such as hotels, meals, and events.”

Américo Villarreal Santiago was appointed federal delegate of the Ministry of Welfare in Coahuila, Mexico on October 2, 2024.
