“After 20 years of effort, dedication, and love for our work, we are forced to close Tacos Ruben’s permanently. The reason is none other than the extortion and threats we have received, which makes it impossible to continue safely,” the message says.
The business thanked the community and clientele, whom it said it will remember fondly and as part of its family.
“Thank you for being part of our history and for making Tacos Ruben’s a special place. We are leaving with sadness, but also with the satisfaction of having served with our hearts until the last day,” he adds.
The history of the business was revealed in the first episode of season 2 of Las crónicas del Taco, a Netflix production. Although they were famous for their Suadero tacos, their menu included tripa, Suadero, cabeza, and lengua tacos, among others.
Tacos Ruben’s adds to the list of hundreds of businesses that have closed their doors as a consequence of the constant threats and extorsions from organized crime groups in Mexico City, which increased significantly during the Lopez Obrador administration and continues up to these days.
