Cancún, Quintana Roo – The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) advises travelers to take precautions when selecting transportation from Cancún International Airport, opting for companies with clear, published rates on official websites or recognized platforms such as TripAdvisor.
This recommendation comes in response to increased complaints about excessive charges for taxi and private transportation services.
Israel Malacón Osuna, head of Profeco in Quintana Roo, emphasized the importance of using accredited transportation providers with visible rates inside the airport to avoid unjustified overcharges.
He pointed out that many social media complaints come from travelers who used unregulated services and ended up paying much more than expected.
Malacón Osuna also urged those booking transportation online to verify that providers are legitimate and registered with tax authorities. “It is essential to ensure that the company is properly accredited and has the necessary permits to operate at the airport,” he stated.
Profeco has an office inside the airport to handle consumer complaints. However, Malacón Osuna clarified that the agency does not regulate taxi fares but ensures that prices are visible and that authorized providers comply with regulations.
Additionally, he warned that if travelers choose unaccredited transportation providers, Profeco has limited ability to intervene in cases of overcharging. “We can only take action when it involves a formally registered provider at the airport; otherwise, it is more difficult to protect consumers’ rights,” he explained.
Despite growing concerns about excessive charges, neither ASUR (Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste), the company managing the airport, nor Profeco publishes an official list of authorized transportation providers. Therefore, travelers are advised to research in advance and choose safe options to avoid inconveniences.
