In Mexico, “Montachoques” are criminals who orchestrate staged car accidents to extort money from unsuspecting drivers.

These fraudsters, often driving luxury vehicles, abruptly brake or maneuver their cars to collide with another vehicle.

They then demand large sums of money for nonexistent damages or threaten the victim with violence if they refuse. This dangerous scam primarily targets drivers in busy urban areas and during peak traffic hours.

Being aware of this tactic and knowing how to respond can help protect you from falling victim to these extortionists.

On December 23, an extortion attempt by a so-called “Montachoques” was caught on video in the city pf Puebla, Mexico.

A motorist tried to cause an accident on the Atlixcáyotl highway, as shown in a video where he is seen blocking the path of other drivers.

Fortunately, the man who recorded the situation managed to avoid him and shared the video to alert others.
