During her morning conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned about the New York Times article on the recruitment of young chemists by the Sinaloa Cartel to produce fentanyl.

Sheinbaum urged the country’s chemistry students not to get involved in the production of fentanyl.

At the National Palace, she was asked about a New York Times article that claims that members of the Sinaloa Cartel would be recruiting young chemists to optimize the production of this substance and its precursors.

Claudia Sheinbaum said that her only knowledge of the subject is from ‘Breaking Bad’

In response, Sheinbaum commented that her only knowledge related to this type of situation comes from the popular television series, ‘Breaking Bad’, which tells the story of a chemistry teacher who makes illicit drugs.

Sheinbaum says that the opioid crisis in the US is a product of international pharmaceutical companies

She explained that there are documents and recognitions by medical associations that show how some pain medications, based on chemical opioids or with similar compositions, gave rise to this problem.

She even recalled a successful lawsuit against a pharmaceutical company that aggressively promoted the consumption of these medications, which, although they were not fentanyl, represented the first steps toward the current crisis.

The president also stated that there is already an agreement to stop fentanyl, in terms of production and consumption.
