Rear Admiral Fernando Rubén Guerrero Alcántar, of the Mexican Navy (Semar), was assassinated on Friday, November 8, in the port of Manzanillo, Colima, while he was driving his vehicle on Lázaro Cárdenas Avenue, in the Las Brisas neighborhood. According to reports, two men on a motorcycle pulled up alongside Guerrero Alcántar’s truck and opened fire on him. Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the naval officer had already lost his life by the time they arrived.
The Navy deeply regretted the incident and expressed its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the rear admiral. In a statement, it said it will collaborate with local authorities to clarify the events and provide all necessary support to the victim’s loved ones.
This crime follows a similar one that occurred just days earlier in the same municipality, on October 29, when another member of the Mexican Navy was shot while on vacation. Thus, the murder of Guerrero Alcántar becomes the second attack against naval personnel in Manzanillo in less than two weeks, an indication of the growing violence affecting the port area.
Guerrero Alcántar, who served as director of the National Customs Agency of Mexico and was once director of the Maritime Customs of Veracruz, was a well-known figure in the field of international trade, especially in the fight against smuggling and drug trafficking. The city of Manzanillo is a key point for Mexico’s foreign trade, but also one of the main hotbeds of violence due to its links to drug trafficking, especially due to the arrival of chemical precursors for the manufacture of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs.
The assassination of the Rear Admiral has occurred in a complex context, where the Port of Manzanillo has been involved in a series of conflicts related to organized crime, including kidnappings and other murders. This series of events highlights the growing concern for security in the region, which remains a critical point for federal and local authorities.
Meanwhile, investigations continue and authorities are looking for those responsible for the attack. The Mexican Navy has reiterated its commitment to the protection of its elements and the well-being of their families, while it is hoped that collaboration with local authorities will help clarify what happened.
