Surveillance cameras captured a man stealing a commemorative sculpture of the Day of the Dead behind the Oaxaca DowCathedral.

In the middle of the celebration season for the Day of the Dead, early this Friday the security cameras in the center of Oaxaca captured the moment when a man stole a catrín, an emblematic figure of these festivities.

The incident occurred on central Aurelio Valdivieso Street, right in front of the sanctuary of the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the

video, which quickly went viral on social networks, you can see how the man crosses the street, approaches the catrín, a handmade figure larger than that of an average person, and carefully unties it before carrying it and disappearing with it.

The catrín, handmade, was specially made for the festivities and was part of the decoration that adorns many businesses in the city these days.

The outrage was not long in coming, as the figure represents the spirit of the season, as well as the work and dedication of Oaxacan artisans.

The video was shared on social media to identify the person responsible and recover the figure. Internet users expressed their repudiation of the act, while the authorities analyzed the images and looked for the person responsible to be held accountable for the theft in the heart of Downtown Oaxaca.
