Sandra Domínguez Martinez, a 38-year-old activist who exposed the misogyny in power in Oaxaca, is reported missing for over two weeks now.
Sandra has been missing since October 4 along with her sentimental partner, they were both last seen alive in San Juan Cotzocón, Oaxaca, on Friday, October 4th.
The human rights defender spoke out and denounced state and federal public officials who are still in their positions.
On Sunday, October 20, the Attorney General of the state of Oaxaca reported the arrest of a possible person involved in the disappearance of activist Sandra Estefana Domínguez Martínez, who has been missing since October 4 along with her husband Alexander Hernández.
“A cell phone belonging to the activist was seized, which was added to the investigations, so forensic work is being carried out to extract digital data, to strengthen the investigations to find the whereabouts of the victims,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported in a statement.
The arrest was made as a result of the criminal intelligence work carried out by the local police in conjunction with the federation with the participation of the National Anti-Kidnapping Coordination (CONASE) of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, which helped to obtain a georeferenced point in Nigromante, located in the municipality of Playa Vicente, Veracruz, and which would be related to the disappearance of the victims.
That is why, thanks to an operation carried out in that area, the cell phone was obtained, a man was arrested, and placed at the disposal of the corresponding ministerial authority to establish whether he was involved in the case and thus determine his legal situation.
Meanwhile, after obtaining new data on the case that are relevant to the ministerial work, the search and location ranges were extended, focusing mainly on different areas of Veracruz, where both the victim’s vehicle and Sandra Domínguez’s phone were seized,” the Prosecutor’s Office indicates.
The Prosecutor’s Office assured that it will continue with the lines of investigation to find Sandra Domínguez and her husband Alexander Hernández.
Who is Sandra Domínguez?
Sandra Estefana Domínguez Martínez is an Oaxacan Mixe lawyer and defender who has reported WhatsApp chats where sexual images of Mixe women were shown, which were disseminated by local officials and politicians.
She confronted the network of sexual harassment in her locality and accompanied and disseminated cases of femicides, acts that earned her threats, which she reported to the state prosecutor’s office while requesting protection.
The United Nations (UN) expressed its concern over the disappearance of the Mixe activist and demanded that authorities investigate and coordinate efforts to find her.
