Mexico is investing an average of 100,000 pesos per month in each of the 3,101 Cuban specialist doctors hired in the country.
In addition to the salary of 27 thousand pesos per month, the cost to transport, feed, and provide lodging for each one is 77 thousand 394 pesos per month on average.
On September 20, four companies won a total of 20 open contracts for up to 833 million pesos, with VAT, for the logistics required by the doctors, sent to the same number of states that ceded their health services to the federal body.
This cost is additional to the payment of salaries, which are deposited to a Cuban government company that from July 2022 to December 2023, when there were only 966 doctors, charged 472 million pesos, an average of 27 thousand pesos per month per employee.
On September 25, the government reported that there are now 3,101 Cuban doctors from 35 specialties operating in the country. The logistics services will be rehired in January, since the agreement with the Cuban government expires in December 2025.
To justify this hiring, the IMSS-Bienestar argued that, in 2022, it was unable to fill 2,369 medical positions for marginalized areas during a recruitment day.
The main winner of the new tender was the company Pigudi Gastronómico, a firm specializing in banquets that won 15 contracts for 667 million pesos.
