Puebla’s uptown neighborhood Lomas de Angelópolis floods every year

64

Lomas de Angelópolis is considered an exclusive area in the city of Puebla, but year after year during the rainy season, floods are recorded that affect its inhabitants.

The causes are varied and range from its location, urban planning, housing unit services, and social culture.

Images and videos showing flooded roads and houses in Lomas de Angelópolis are spread on social networks, surprising every year during the rainy season.

Causes of floods
The floods derive from the various risks that exist in the area, in at least three aspects:

First, its proximity to the Atoyac River, which when it rises in level and overflows, generates floods that are not limited to the main roads, but even reach the subdivisions, affecting homes and vehicles in general.

A second aspect is the public drainage services, whose capacity is exceeded, in addition to the cleaning and dredging work that must be carried out daily.

A third element corresponds to real estate, concerning planning and construction, in which elements such as the possible consequences of natural phenomena, in principle, rain, had to be considered.

Finally, a poor social culture regarding solid waste management, primarily on public roads, contributes to garbage blocking the drainage.

These factors, together, make up a mix that results in the floods that periodically affect the residents of Lomas de Angelópolis.

The worst floods in Lomas de Angelópolis occurred on June 30, 2017, when intense rain caused flooding and landslides in the Lomas de Angelópolis subdivision. The Atoyac River overflowed, exceeding the capacity of the hydraulic containment works.

In June 2019, there were also severe floods in that municipality and sections of the Las Torres and Periférico-Ecológico roads.

The years go by and the floods remain in Lomas de Angelópolis.
