Bishops from Guatemala and Chiapas are begging organized crime groups to stop the violence that causes the forced displacement of communities in the region.

Through a public letter addressed mainly to the three levels of government in Mexico, and “the creators and executors of violence,” the priests accuse that “there are no conditions” to carry out the extraordinary elections on August 25.

“The electoral process intensifies violence in territories where economic, political, extractive interests, coming from outside, have marked options, positions, and struggles that could only be destroyed with weapons and extermination groups (…),” reads the letter.

According to the letter from the religious leaders, “the Chiapaneco communities of Chicomuselo, Comalapa, Amatenango, Jaltenango, Bejucal de Ocampo, Siltepec, Motozintla, have become a battlefield due to the dispute over territory between criminal groups.”

“The dismantling and disarmament of the groups that ravage the State of Chiapas is urgent,” emphasizes the letter signed by Bernabé Sagastume, Rodrigo Aguilar, Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini, and Guadalupe Torres.
