Mexico and Cuba Sign Agreement to Increase the Presence of Cuban Doctors in the Mexican Health System

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced the signing of a new agreement with the Government of Cuba to incorporate 2,700 Cuban medical specialists into the Mexican public health system.

This announcement was made during the president’s morning conference, known as “La Mañanera.” With this addition, the total number of Cuban doctors in the country will rise to 3,650, including the 950 who are already working in 23 states.

The director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, reported that the main objective of the agreement is to strengthen medical personnel in community hospitals, comprehensive hospitals, and other health facilities, especially in rural and highly marginalized areas.

The intention is for these hospitals to have a staff of 12 doctors, covering specialties such as internal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.

According to López Obrador, this agreement represents a significant effort to improve medical care in the most needy communities in Mexico.

The Mexican president says that the incorporation of Cuban doctors seeks to alleviate the lack of specialists in remote regions and improve the quality of medical service in these areas.

However, millions of Mexican citizens do not agree with this measure, since they consider that there are enough doctors in Mexico to meet the demand; and they also maintain that these Cubans are not doctors, but people who come from the island of Cuba with the purpose of indoctrinating children and young people in the rural communities of Mexico, instilling Marxist and communist ideas in this vulnerable sector of the population.
