Puebla’s Switzerland: Get to know the ideal municipality to visit in the rainy season

This municipality offers several tourist attractions, such as its impressive viewpoints, beautiful waterfalls, historical monuments and architectural works.

Zacapoaxtla, one of the 217 municipalities of the state of Puebla, whose name comes from Nahuatl and means “Place where grass abounds”, although it is not a Magical Town, it has been cataloged as the “Switzerland of Puebla”.

Why is Zacapoaxtla called the Puebla Switzerland?

Zacapoaxtla, known as the “Switzerland of Puebla”, received this nickname due to its climate of recurring rains, fog and forested landscapes that evoke the typical characteristics of Switzerland.

The combination of its location in the Sierra Madre Oriental, its environment surrounded by hills and the extinct Apaxtepec volcano, and the Texpilco, Apulco and Atehuetzin rivers, creates an environment similar to that of the famous Swiss landscapes.

What to do in Zacapoaxtla?

Zócalo of Zacapoaxtla: visit the Zócalo where you can find a monument in honor of the Zacapoaxtla Battalion, as well as the Municipal Palace and the Lateran Parish of San Pedro Apóstol, which dates back to the 17th century.

Zacapoaxtla Viewpoints: To experience why Zacapoaxtla is compared to Switzerland, don’t miss its viewpoints:

  • Mirador Santa Anita or Los Asientos: located south of the city, it is one of the most visited viewpoints by tourists.

La Cortadura Viewpoint: north of the city, this viewpoint is considered the most spectacular. It offers impressive views from a narrow bridge that allows you to admire the two deep ravines of Zacapoaxtla.

Viewpoint on Miguel Negrete Street: it offers a magnificent view of the western canyon and the high mountains of the northwest.

Waterfalls: Zacapoaxtla is known for its beautiful waterfalls, especially La Olla and La Gloria, which are popular destinations among visitors.

Brief history of Zacapoaxtla

Zacapoaxtla has a fascinating history dating back to 1270 AD. It is said that its foundation occurred after the eruption of the Apaxtepec volcano, which buried the town of Xaltetelli and gave rise to Zacapoaloyan, today known as Zacapoaxtla.

In addition to its pre-Hispanic past, Zacapoaxtla is famous for its role in the Battle of May 5, 1862.

How to get to Zacapoaxtla?

Zacapoaxtla is located approximately 2 and a half hours from the capital of the state of Puebla. Here we tell you how to get there both by own vehicle and by bus:

  1. Go to the Puebla Bus Station (CAPU).
  2. There take a bus on the VIA or AU lines that offer direct trips to Zacapoaxtla. These buses guarantee a comfortable and accessible visit from the city of Puebla.
